Brain Injury Therapy

Enhancing Psychological Therapy in Community Mental Health Services for Adults with a History of Brain Injury

The Project: Integrated Psychological Therapy Services (IPTS) provides a range of psychological therapies for adults across Hywel Dda University Health Board (HDUB). IPTS staff are from a range of professional backgrounds who have trained in evidence-based psychological therapies.

Experiencing a brain injury can lead to health changes that can affect the experience of standard psychological therapy. Standard psychological therapy may not be as helpful for people who have lived experience of a brain injury, and carers, friends and family.
Psychological therapy can be adapted to be more helpful for people who have experienced a brain injury, however training for mental health therapists usually does not include the necessary information and skills.

This project will focus on co-producing training that will inform and support psychological therapists in meeting the needs of people with lived experience of a brain injury.

This project will involve:

  • Talking to people with lived experience of a brain injury, including carers, family and friends, about their experiences of NHS mental health services.
  • Generating ideas about how to improve local psychological therapy services.
  • Co-production of a training package for mental health therapists.
